Wanale ridge is 2348 metres spur of Mt Elgon whose rocky face is run down by several waterfalls. This ridge dominates Mbale eastern skyline much as the Table Mountain dominates Cape Town. There is a good all weather road to the top of the ridge and this area is the food basket of Mbale and surrounding towns.
This ridge is very accessible and ideal for outdoor adventure activities like hiking, camping and rock climbing. The full potential of this ridge as a tourist destination has not been tapped attempts were made in the mid sixties to put a hotel at the top in the mid 1960s but since then little has changed.
Hiking to the top of Wanale ridge is a must not miss for visitors to Mbale, the steep trail explores superb mountain scenery, while the lofty panorama across Mbale from the top is like looking at a map. Guided and unguided hikes and Mountain Bikes can be arranged by Karibuni Safaris. On the cliff face Corey a Canadian volunteer at Bunabumali primary school is setting up a new rock climbing trail.
At the top of the ridge Mt Elgon national park offers two guided trails of 3 and 6 KMs in length behind the main cliff face. The main attraction along the trail is Khauka cave which contains logs of petrified wood. To hike in the national park you pay 30 USD per day and tented accommodation and food arranged by Karibuni on request for hikers.
Though not developed for tourism, the easy access, perfect road and breathtaking scenery makes this an ideal destination. While the park fees are a put off, there is a lot of activity for hikers outside the park. Karibuni made a proposal of 10 USD fee for day hikes to Uganda Wild life Authority. Wanale remains off the beaten path and ideal for travellers looking for exploration opportunities at affordable prices.

Uganda is positioned on the Equator at the crossroads of The East African plains. Uganda is one of Africa’s richest countries in terms of bird species. Our Uganda safari takes in the premier regions including the Impenetrable Forest at Bwindi, which holds several endemic species: Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Kivu Ground-thrush and Red-faced Woodland Warbler. We also visit some swamps in search for the enigmatic Shoebill, Papyrus Gonolek and White-winged Warbler. This trip to ‘The Pearl of Africa’ will produce a long bird list plus sightings of primates on a gorilla safari and other mammals.

Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park you find almost 550 avian species in one park alone and 350 species have been recorded in the Bwindi Impenetrable forest. These two parks alone are among the richest protected areas to be found anywhere on Earth. Accolades for Uganda’s birding delights are rarely understated. Nigel Wheatley, for instance, in Where to Watch Birds in Africa (1995) said: “In terms of its size, Uganda is the richest country for birds in Africa.” And this immense volume and diversity occurs miraculously in a space which keen birders can cover in a relatively short visit. Noted author Philip Briggs writes: “Uganda is arguably the best country in Africa for birds; with about 1000 species recorded in an area the size of Great Britain.”

BIRDING SAFARI IN MABIRA RAIN FORESTS

Birding in Uganda is one of the most exciting Uganda safaris that one can experience in a lifetime because Uganda is gifted with a population of over 1000 different bird species spread all over the Country but with major birding areas one of which is the Mabira forest which supports over 300 bird species most of which are endemic to only Mabira Forest coupled with close to 218 butterfly species. An excellent Trail System allows access to both undisturbed primary and good secondary forest, Managed by the Forestry department with input from local community, Mabira Forest was opened to the public in 1996. The revenue generated from eco tourism is shared between the forestry department and the local community.

One of Mabira’s strengths lies in the large number of birds which may be seen from the visitor’s center. Flowering trees in the clearing attract a variety of sun birds such as green, Little Olive, Blue throated brown, Green throated, olive bellied and superb sun birds. Other forest edge species include speckle -breasted Woodpecker, Black throated Apalis, African blue Flycatcher and Grey-crowned Negro finch. Forest Ribon, Snowy headed Robin-Chat, Grey capped warbler, Black and white Flycatcher, Dusky Tit and common Wattle Eye occur around the Campsite where Buff-spotted Fluff tail and African wood owl may be heard in the evenings.

The beautiful Primary forest south of the main Kampala-Jinja road is a prime birding area harbouring a number of species that avoid secondary forest.

This birding safari takes you to Mabira forest, a tropical rain forest in central Uganda for the search of forest birds secluded in this largest forest block in the Central part of Uganda. Other wildlife safari activities include Forest walks, butterfly viewing, primate watching (monkeys) etc. The Forest offers camping, picnics and hiking activities.

Uganda is a country of diversity in spite of its size, we are blessed with a wide range of cultures and traditions, with over 30 different indigenous languages. Uganda’s cultural diversity can be seen through colorful traditions, dances, ceremonies, history and lifestyle of the people.
Uganda is a unique tourist destination to tourists interested in cultural tourism. If you are interested in any of Uganda’s cultural tours, please feel most welcome book your cultural safari in Uganda with Karibuni Safaris and we take care of your excursion leaving you free for a trouble free safari.

Cultural Tours
Typically Kampala has been used as a spring board for a plethora of natural attractions and visit to Uganda safari parks in the hinterland. However today it’s being recognized that Kampala itself has a lot to offer. A lot of which is founded in the Buganda kingdom which until 1993 had been banned by past governments.
Kampala in the 1970s was alluded to as the city on seven hills; today Kampala is a sprawling city covering over 40 hills. Kampala has a vibrant night life and remains open 24 hours daily in suburbs like Kasanga, Ggaba, Ntinda, Wandegeya, Nakulabye and the city center.

Kampala Cultural sites – Kampala the historical capital of Uganda has some interesting cultural sites. These include the Kasubi tombs , a cultural burial site for the Kings of Buganda. The Uganda Museum has several ethnological exhibits which portray culture, traditions of Uganda, agriculture, war, religion, hunting, and archeology. It is rich with a collection of historical, cultural and unique materials describing the Ugandan people.

The Kabaka’s Lake, the Bulange & the Kabaka’s palace.
Kabaka’s Trail includes 6 sites namely; Naggalabi Buddo Coronation site where the Buganda Kings are crowned, Katareke Prison site where the king murdered his brothers and sisters for fear that they might dethrone him, Wamala King’s Tombs where the kind were buried and a place of culture and rituals, Nnamasole Kanyange Tombs the Burial place for the Queen, Nnamasole Baagalayaze Tombs and Cultural Centre for traditional performances, arts and crafts and Ssezibwa Falls a place of rituals and cultural beliefs with the Legend that the river was born of a woman. These falls attract many locals who seek blessings.

The Bagisu Cultures
The Bagisu from the Mount Elgon region are known for their Imbalu ceremony that occurs during even years performed to initiate young boys into Manhood ; an interesting feature of this ethnic group of Ugandans. This ceremony is carnival where people dance through out the festival in Mbale. (Create link with more…. here for the rest of these cultures) Another interesting group worth seeing is our strong community of African Jews (Abayudaya) whose synagogue is 15 minutes drive from Mbale; however, Karibuni must obtain prior permission to visit this site.

Semei Kakungulu (a renowned agent of the colonial rulers in Uganda) Tombs are located about 5 square Kilometres off the Mbale-Soroti road while the Mutoto Circumcision site is located within Mbale Municipality. Semei Kakungulu Tombs and the Mutoto Circumcision sites are the most important cultural / heritage sites in Mbale District. Mbale also hosts the tombs of the former representative of the colonial government in charge of Eastern Uganda. The Mutoto site is a place where the bi-annual tribal circumcision ceremony is launched.

Rwenzori is the most technically challenging mountain to climb in Africa, trekking this range is like walking into a lost world described by one trekker as the Jurassic Park. The range is open to trekkers on a safari in Uganda from July-September and December-February and remains closed for half of the year due to extreme weather and boggy ground that makes it difficult to summit it.
With its snow peaks looming over the equator, Mt Rwenzori is a geographical marvel formed by uplift caused by the Great Rift Valley. In 150 AD Ptolemy a distinguished geographer made a map of Africa fanning speculation of a snowy source of the Nile. He called this range Lunae Montes or “mountain of the moons” a name which has since become popular for the Rwenzori.
Trails to the summit are clad with dense montane forest, huge bamboo, muddy bogs, steep and slippery terrain. “No forest can be grimmer and stranger than this”, observed Fillipo de Fillipi on the first expedition to explore this range and map its peaks led by Prince Luigi Amadeo, Duke of Abruzzi in 1906. The hike is very demanding and will challenge even the experienced climber.
As the global climate change takes its toll, the receding glaciers now cover half a square mile from the 2.5 square miles recorded in 1906 and snow has since disappeared from 3 of the 6 major peaks. The countdown for snow to completely disappear on the Rwenzori has started; this maybe your last trek to Africa’s disappearing glaciers.

Wow, I can’t believe it has only been a little more than 3 months since we were all back in Africa. This will be our third exclusive Uganda safari with Karibuni Safaris and without any question being able to have you in particular meet us at the airport each trip comforts us immensely. Just knowing you will be there upon our arrival and remain with us for our entire trip as we travel about hours on end gives us and our families the piece of mind when planning our trips.
Just knowing you will be there with your usual dependability has allowed us to focus on so many other adventures we wish to take while being in Uganda.

Christmas at Murchison Falls with Karibuni Safaris

December 2009

Sometime in mid-December 2009 I called up Karibuni Safaris to inquire about the options there were for Christmas packages. I was immediately impressed by their professionalism. They were candid with me about the fact that I was trying to make the booking quite late. Within 24hours they got back to me with a few available options. It was clear that Karibuni had listened carefully to what I wanted, and had not tried to give me options to suit their convenience. They had gone an extra mile to meet our wishes. I received advice on how else the options would make our experience as a family more worthwhile. It was good to see that Karibuni were mindful of my two little toddlers as they came up with the proposals. This kind of attention to detail made my family more confident about Karibuni.

What we loved most about the whole experience was the absence of surprises! Karibuni kept every promise they made. Our allocated driver, Ronnie, doubled as a tour guide. This reduced the cost a bit, but more importantly, made the trip more comfortable since we had to work with fewer people. We agreed with Ronnie that he would pick us up at our residence at 8.00am on December 24. He was at the gate by 7.30am! For the next 4 days he kept time the same way. Ronnie was familiar with all the details of our bookings. He helped us check into Sambiya River Lodge and assisted us to get onto the other services we had booked. Ronnie is a very professional driver. He obeyed traffic rules and made it a point to continuously ask for feedback from us especially regarding his speed on different routes and trails. The vehicle was very comfortable and was kept clean at all times. The snack and drinks box was well stocked at all times, and it was good to learn that the refreshments were complimentary (maybe one surprise after all!)

Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the national park. He knew exactly where to take us to see the animals and attractions we were interested in seeing. He was quite proactive. A good example is how he often offered to help us take pictures when we wanted to appear together as a family. During the game drive and boat ride we saw elephants, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, Uganda kob, water buck, various species of monkeys, a lioness, warthogs, various species of birds and lizards, baboons, and a few other animals I cannot recall off-head.

The highlight of our holiday was the visit to the Murchison safari falls. It was a breath-taking sight. We had an opportunity to see the falls from both the top and the bottom on separate trips.

As we drove between the different sites planned, Ronnie often pointed out different features of interest we could have missed. He obliged whenever we requested to make unscheduled stop-overs to take in these features.

Thank you Karibuni for making our holiday memorable.

Travel from Kampala to Kisoro which is about 540 km from Uganda’s Capital city after safari briefing. Overnight at Mgahinga Uganda safari Lodge and Travellers’ rest.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga.
Have an early morning breakfast as you get set to visit the gorilla world, clearing up aspects of their ecosystem and behavior. A gorilla safari is the most exciting and unforgettable experience, which might take one through a thick jungle for the whole of the day. The tourists group (The Nyakagezi group) consists of 9 members; 3 adult females, 2 silver backs, 2 juveniles and 2 infants. (Tracking can take three to eight hours). Gorilla tracking is very tiring so one has to go geared up. It is prudent that you wear good toehold shoes suitable for muddy places and binoculars for easy vision. Overnight at Mgahinga Safari Lodge and Travellers’ rest.

Day 3: Departure
Continue through the upper Biggo bog. The leads to drier ground and after criss crossing the river, this leads to the Bujuku Lake. This is also the best place for seeing the Margherita, the summit of Stanley. Continue the trail for about 30 minutes up the valley to Bujuku hut at 3962 meters. This hut is very popular because of being the closest to the peaks of Speke, Baker and Stanley. Watch out for red duikers. Over night at Bujuku hut.

Another descent leading to Kitandara hut 4023 meters. Also for overnight.

This 5 Km stretch involves ascent and descent and takes 5 to 6 hours. While at Lake Kitandara take a view of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Prepare for a steep climb over boulders and through thick mud before the path gives way to a more level ground at the Fresh field pass. You can get a clear view of mount Stanley. A steep descend, climbing rocks and wadding through thick muddy to Guy Yeoman hut 3262 meters.

Day 7: Guy Yeoman hut to Nyabitaba.

Pampered by nature, Mt Elgon offers several eco-tourism activities for the contemplative traveler as well as avid hikers hunkering for the outdoors. The picturesque landscape combines all elements with harmony, giving you stunning views, rivers to ford and hills to climb. Peppered with cliffs, caves, gorges, waterfalls, canyons and rolling plateaus this destination is perfect for outdoor adventure.

Mt Elgon has the largest surface areas of any extinct volcanoes in the world, in prehistoric time it towered above all Africa’s mountains but millennia of erosion have cut it down to 4321 metres. This is the premier destination for hikers, free spirits looking for solitary trails unspoiled by mass tourism. Hikers on this safari in Uganda can trek for several days without seeing another tourist an impossible dream on Mt Kilimanjaro.

Mt Elgon is becoming increasingly popular with budget hikers. Breathtaking views are the main draw for hikers of this often neglected but easy mountain to climb. Hikers pass 4 concentric zones of Afro-montane, ranging from tropical and bamboo forest giving way to open moorland studded with the other worldly lobelia and giant groundsel.

There are 4 trails to the summit, namely Sasa, Sipi, Piswa and Suam. The most popular is the Sasa trail, ascends steeply from Budadiri overnight camp at Mudde before summiting the Jackson or Wagagai peak. All trails are interconnected you can ascend on one and descend on the other. Mt Elgon’s best suited for extended hiking due to gradual terrain, an altitude rise 600 metres from Kapkwai to Tutum caves requires an 11 KMs hike.

This mountain offers several settings concentrated in a small area, creating nature’s paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Beginners and ardent hikers alike find trails leading to breathtaking views. Explorers can follow the well groomed trails or simply go off the beaten track enjoy miles of pristine wilderness and the solitude of Africa’s best kept secret. The challenge however, is not ascending the summit but rather descending the caldera and exploring caves in the crater and soaking you in the hot springs.

This hike takes place between Fort Portal and Bundibugyo via Bwamba pass. You take a ride to the trail head and begin a 6-8 hours relatively strenuous hike. This hike is popular with travelers wanting to blaze new trails without being encumbered by park entry fees. This is a trail operated by Abanya Rwenzori Mountaineering Association.
The trailhead lies at Kazingo Trading Center 8 KMs south of Kichwamba. From Kazingo a steep one hour hike gets you to Kighomu follow a clear path and plantations. The altitude gain from Kazingo is 400 metres, putting you at 2050 metres.
There is a community campsite a short distance above Kighomu and a few affordable basic rooms are available. Beddings and meals have to be arranged in advance. Several trails radiate from the campsite you can put in several days of trekking the area. Unhabituated chimpanzees are present in the nearby forests the chances of seeing them slim.
The east to west path takes you 2150 metres, climbing to the forest edge, then to bamboo covered ridge at 2450 metres. The alternative route takes you to an altitude of 3000 metres; you need a local guide to show you the way. The reward is seeing four monkey species like the Angola Colobus present here.
From the ridge mountain, you descend a muddy path through bamboo forest before descending steeply towards Bundibugyo. The hike to the base of the ridge takes about 2 hours depending on which route you took from Kighomu. The final hike from the base to Bundibugyo takes 3 hours.
This is an interesting trek for those willing to rough it out a bit; one should be physically fit to enjoy this hike. It is great value and gives an opportunity to interact and get to know the Batoro and Bamba culture and rewards you with panoramic views of the snow peaks of Mt Rwenzori.

The Sipi River rises from Mt Elgon before cascading down several cliffs on Mt Elgon over 7 KMs to from a series of spectacular waterfalls. Sipi Falls the most famous is a 100 metres waterfall, reputed to be most romantic and famous waterfalls in Uganda. Sipi is great place to chill out and relax or to be adventurous. Sipi area is one of Uganda’s travel hotspot, where everybody asks you whether you need a guide.
Hikers have an opportunity to descend to the base of the falls and using the wooden ladders visit the bat caves with petrified wood. In the past this area was mined for the crude salt deposits. Behind Sipi River lodge, lie Kapsuru waterfalls with a height of 80 metres. If you hike to the top of these falls you see a plethora of waterfalls in the distance with breathtaking landscape and an abundance of birdlife.
A longer trek of 7 KMs will take you to the bottom of the third set of falls, with a tempting swimming pool at the bottom. On the longer hike you need a guide to show you the way and carry packed lunch. Serious hikers can summit Mt Elgon from here using the Sipi trail and getting park entry permits from Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, where you can hire guides and porters as well.
The adventurous can try out abseiling and rock climbing; options are available for all standards from 25 metres all the way to the bottom of 100 metres waterfalls. There are 10 sport climbing routes bolted into the cliff adjacent to Sipi Falls operated by Rob Rolling Rock.
Rainbow Trout was recently introduced in Sipi River and it’s the best place for anglers to tryout fly fishing in Uganda. The fly fishing is operated by Bingo Small, in the secluded reaches of Sipi River. The policy is catch and release, rods and accessories are available for hire. Tuition and permits can be arranged at Sipi River Lodge. There is a section in Mt Elgon National Park, where technical anglers can try their talents after paying park entrance fees. Mountain bikes can be arranged with Karibuni Safaris.

KAPKWAI FOREST EXPLORATION CENTRE

Located 10 KMs from Sipi Falls, in the boundaries of Mt Elgon National Park is the forest exploration center. Designed to accommodate and train children from local schools, it is now open to tourists, with 4 wood cabins, 4 tents and camping grounds. The Exploration Center has 3 day trails for hiker that offer an insight into the flora of Mt Elgon for those who cannot spare time for the full trek.
Day Hikes
Bamboo Loop- This takes in some huge bamboo and gives an opportunity to see Wagagai summit on clear days. This 7 KM, 5 hour hike takes you to Kapkwai cave before climbing to the view point. This loop is great for birding and primate viewing.
Chebonet Falls Trail- This popular 3 hour trail passes the eponymous waterfalls as well as climbing up a rocky chimney through the montane forest as you emerge to the view point. You should be physically fit to enjoy this trail.
Ridge View Loop- This is a relatively easy 2 hour trail which involves a relatively easy ascent of the ridge to the main view point. This trail is recommended for the elderly and unfit hikers.

Tutum Cave – The toast of Kapkwai and the longest trail, covering 11 KMs takes a whole day. Starting at Kapkwai you ascend gradually to 2650 metres as you get to 300 metres long Tutum cave, used in the past for traditional dancing. Tutum literally means dance-dance. Many hikers prefer camping overnight in the cave, packed meals, warm clothing and sleeping bags come in handy.

Kalinzu forest reserve is an extension of the better known Maramagambo forest. Pitched at the top of the Albertine Escarpment the 147 sq km reserve is a natural forest teaming with 414 species of trees and shrubs, 378 species of birds such Great Blue Turaco, Sun Birds and Black and White Casket. Six different species of primates are found here like Blue Monkey, Vervet Monkey, Black and White Colobus and Chimpanzees.

The total number of chimpanzees in this reserve is about 240 of which 70 or two groups have been habituated for tourism and research purposes. Other species include 262 butterflies, 97 moths, reptiles and flowers. Standing at the Kishunja hill viewpoint, one can behold the entire forest canopy; see parts of Queen Elizabeth National park and the snow peaks of Mt Rwenzori.
Due to its proximity to Queen Elizabeth National Park, the forest occasionally provides refuge to savannah species such as Duikers, Leopards and wart hogs. The activities here include nature walks, research, birding, butterfly identification, chimp tracking and small animal viewing.
Recently developed for tourism, this reserve offers do it yourself camp site, there are a series of trails for guided and unguided walks that follow the rift valley escarpment. Kalinzu eco-tourism site has experienced and professional local guides who will make your getaway a thrilling experience. This area has several picturesque crater Lakes, one at Rutoto shaped like the map of Africa.
The most demanding hike is the 11 km waterfall trail, which takes you 4-5 hours on a slippery hilly terrain. The highlight of this trail is the Kilyantama waterfalls and you should also expect to see a variety of monkeys, birds, several tree species more especially the fig tree known to make the finest bark cloth. This is a must not miss for the budget conscious traveler and easily accessible from the main road.
This reserve is located in Bushenyi District, 375 kms from Kampala (5 hours drive). You travel 30 km along Kasese-Mbarara highway and turn left at Rugazi. The camping site is located at Nkombe forest station. Because of the Albertine terrain with old logging and winding roads a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended.
Karibuni Safaris can arrange the excursion with camping gear, complete with binoculars and mountain bikes. This trip is best undertaken as an extension to the visit of the Albertine Rift Valley. Visitors should be physically fit and willing to rough it out a bit. An all inclusive trip for a minimum of 4 people for 3days 2 nights costs 250 USD per person. This trip is best done June- September and December to February.

Mpanga Falls is formed when Mpanga River tumbles over the rift valley escarpment before emptying into Lake Gorge. These falls are estimated to be 40 metres high are enclosed in a steep narrow gorge whose visibility is obscured by a riparian forest. Vegetation here is caught in a time warp this site is home to the largest colony of the spectacular encephalartos whitelockii which is highly threatened and occupies one square kilometer in a stretch of 16 Kilometers.
The profusion of cycad species endemic to this single location, make this gorge an ecological gem for mankind. Cycads are an ancient order of coniferous plants which flourished 200-300 million years ago; this is the closest thing to seeing living fossils. This plant is classified as endangered because it grows extremely slowly and the Mpanga gorge colony probably the largest in the world. Encephalartos Whitelockii is endemic to Uganda and known to occur nowhere else in the world.
Mpanga Falls is not developed for tourism and rarely visited; this probably preserved the delicate ecology. This excursion can be done as a day trip from Fort Portal or an extension of the trip to Kibale Forest National Park. We can arrange a camping excursion for those willing to rough-it abit and test African outdoors or an itinerary that combines chimp tracking and a visit to the Ndali crater lakes.
These falls are visible from an angle view point; the best views may involve a descent with climbing gear down the 40 metres gorge. This site comes top off the beaten track, as the ecology here is highly threatened by a proposal to build a small 18 megawatts hydropower generator. This is a must not miss for ecologically minded tourists, explorers and researchers as this maybe our last chance to save these cycads.

About 37 KMs from Kampala on Masaka road is Mpanga Forest reserve a little getaway makes for a rustic alternative to the hassle and bustle of urban life in Kampala. This young 45 sq KM forest a little older than 50 years is used as tropical research institute; the sheer size of the trees attest to progress that can be made in conservation with well managed programmes. It has an extensive network of wide footpaths initially made for researches and now opens to the public.
The reserve protects an extensive medium altitude rainforest, which vegetation once covered the Lake Victoria hinterland. Mpanga forest harbors fewer fauna than larger natural forests, but still offers the visitor plenty to see. Among the most outstanding is the Celtics family species with large buttresses and Mahogany. The proximity to Kampala is a major draw for a visit. The most observable animal is the Red Tailed Monkey, bush pig and flying squirrels.
Mpanga has a vibrant bird life where you can see the African Pied Hornbill, Black and White Casqued Hornbill and African Grey Parrot. The Great Blue Turaco and Blue Chested King Fisher are the most conspicuous of the 180 birds recorded. This forest is contagious with a papyrus swamp which continues up to Lake Victoria. This swamp is the home of the rare and endangered Shoebill and other papyrus endemics like the Rofous Bellied Heron, Papyrus Yellow Warbler and other rarities.
Activities here include a visit to the village of Mpambire home to the makers of Buganda Kingdom Royal drums. They also make several other musical instruments like xylophone, flutes etc. Visitors can be shown how the instruments are made and you can buy souvenirs.

There are four trails- the base line trail follows a path west, crossing two streams and emerges at Nyakatema swamp where the Shoebill and Papyrus Gonolek are resident. The Hornbill loop- this covers more undulating terrain and fording 4 streams. The butterfly trail- here one sees monkeys, forest birds and myriads of butterflies in 30 minutes’ walk. The Family trail- explores the diverse themes of growth of the forest trees, seed dispersal and growth responses.
Within the reserve The National Forestry Authority has created a eco-tourism centre. It offers basic accommodation at the visitor reception centre, one tourist banda, a self contained duplex, a double room and dormitory. There is a tent for hire at a modest fee. These are self catering facilities although light meals can be ordered from the caretaker. This is must not miss for visitors to Kampala who have a few hours to spare.

Jinja overlooks the point where the Nile flows out of Lake Victoria and it’s the mighty river that draws visitors to Jinja. This is the world’s best white water rafting on your door step. The thrilling series of 5 grade rapids below Bujagali Falls have emerged recently to be the most exciting tourist activity Uganda, eclipsing even the Mountain Gorilla tour. It is indeed one of the world’s most spectacular white water rafting destinations and visitors make a rafting trip the highlight of their visit.
Jinja has developed a reputation of being the adrenaline capital of East Africa, due to the multi-adventure activities available. The 50 KM stretch of Victoria Nile is a now a legendary white water rafting and kayaking route as exhilarating as that of the lower Zambezi gorge. Adrift also offers a popular family float trip over 2 days, which gives the young a chance to try out the river action.
White Water Rafting
White water rafting is a one day itinerary starting at Bujagali falls and terminating at Itanda. This route has 9 major rapids, with 4 classified as grade 5, namely Total Gunga, Big Brother, Overtime and Itanda. On the river you can see several river birds and take a dip on the Nile waters in calmer water between rapids. Two day trips can be arranged at a bargain; there other incentives like meals, beer and transport on offer.
Kayak Cruises
A kayak cruise is an easy, relaxed and use friendly paddling adventure, suitable for all ages. There are single user and tandem kayaks. Kayak the Nile offers a 2 day cruise with an overnight camp enroute. Each kayak is fitted with 2 rod holders for the fishing enthusiasts; incidentally you fish your dinner. The guides pride themselves of an impeachable safety record, which makes for an enjoyable trip. Other trips include, short haul explorer, sunset trip, Lake Victoria discovery and fishing excursions.
Jet Boating
Jet boats were added to growing lists of activities in Jinja, by Adrift Adventure Company. This boat inhales water from compresses it and shoots out 20 litres per second gaining a top speed of 90 KM/H and by maneuvered by adjusting the rear jet. This boat can cruise rivers with shallow water, impassable by conventional propeller-powered boat. This jet boat makes hair raising spins, sneaks through narrow spaces, jets over rapids and is more exciting than a roller coaster.
Bungee Jumping
Until recently Nile High Bungee was Uganda’s only bungee jump, a 44 metres plunge into the Nile set up close to the river bank. It looks very scary from the top but very safe and gets over in a few seconds. This a fine way to wind down your Uganda adventure experiences

River Boarding
This is a new sport for brave hearts, this involves taking on the mighty Nile armed with a boogie board. A similar sport using jerry cans has always been done by the locals taking on Bujagali falls.
Nile Flyer
This involves flying across the river Nile supported by a steel wire. This is similar to hang gliding with a guaranteed safe landing. This is another way to get up close and personal with the Nile.
Other Uganda safari adventures
Other adventures on offer are Nile horseback safaris, Quad biking, Mountain biking, boat cruising, canoeing, sport fishing and the list is keeps growing. The Nile looks set to take on the Zambezi for the title of Africa’s number one adventure destination in coming years.

This area 20 KMs from Fort Portal facing the mountain of the moons is peppered with the world’s densest concentration of crater lakes. The landscape is dotted with picturesque crater lakes all of which offer great hiking and exploration opportunities. A Uganda safari visit to this area is best combined with chimp trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, a visits to Mpanga Falls and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.
Lake Nkuruba- is the leading contender of the most beautiful lake; it is surrounded entirely by a dense tropical forest. This place offers great hiking opportunities including a one hour trek to Lake Nyabikere. Affordable and comfortable accommodation is available at Lake Nkuruba Community Camp site, and what you pay benefits the community.
Lake Nyinambuga is another lake ringed by dense tropical forest. The luxurious Ndali Lodge is patched on a ridge above the lake. It has the apt strap line “paradise has some serious competition”. The views here are breathtaking with Mt Rwenzori looming in the horizon on clear days you can see the snow peaks. While in this lake beware of the solitary resident hippo .
Lake Nyabikere is another tranquil spot and lies off the road to Bigodi wetland sanctuary. Dugout canoes are available from CVK lodge for those wishing to explore the lake. A range of accommodation is available to suit all budgets.
Mahoma Waterfall- The falls form when river Mohoma gushes over several boulders into a forested valley. Below this waterfall you can swim in the river or have a power shower under the falls. This is a welcome break after the sweaty hike in the crater area.
There are several other crater lakes like Mwamba, Kabata, Kasende, Wankenzi and Murigamire to mention but afew. The crater lakes offer the explorer plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in a tranquil setting on pocket friendly excursion. Bird watchers will find paradise a bonus due to the variety of bird species.

Sisiyi Falls is located on the foothills of Mt Elgon in Sironko District, 40 KMs from Mbale accessed by an all weather tarmac road for 26 KMs and the last 14 KMs on a motorable dirt road. Sisiyi literally means the river never dries up. This is the lowest major waterfall on Mt Elgon as the river tumbles over Sisiyi Cliff and its waters meander lazily towards Lake Kyoga.

River Sisiyi originates from a crater lake on Mt Elgon meanders underground at Bukibologoto Village. From here the roaring waters plunge 100 metres into a gorge emitting a steam like chilly spray. At the bottom of the falls is a natural swimming pool that tempts you to swim.
Until 2005, Sisiyi Falls was one of Uganda’s well kept secrets and the falls only known by the local community who complained about the rocky landscape unusable for farming. This little known but easily accessible waterfall is slowly becoming an adventurer’s tour destination. It’s currently visited by missionaries, NGOs and the Indian business community and remains off limits to the major tour circuit.
Accommodation is provided by Dr Patrick Mutono in 4 self contained rooms with a restaurant and bar. There is camping space for the adventurous who thirst for the African outdoors in a relaxed atmosphere. The camp is lit using solar lanterns and the boulders used as lamp posts. The owners have landscaped the grounds introducing flowers and plants which attract birds and insects.
Activities available here include, hiking to the top of the falls a strenuous 2 KM trek which rewards you with spectaculars views of Lake Kyoga, Sironko town and the plains of Kumi. You can take a dip in the natural pool at the base of the falls and swim all day. There are the coffee growing and fermentation excursions and cultural experiences like kadodi and imbalu dances.
Alternatively you can engage in bird watching or simply chill-out to rhythms of the roaring waters. The adventurous can try rock climbing on the 7 routes at Nagudi Rock, the routes are bolted however climbers need to carry their own equipment. Other attractions to Budadiri area the rock paintings on Sasa trail head in Budadiri. This trip more fun undertaken on mountain bikes from Mbale.
This destination is number one in our off the beaten path and designed for those looking for new experiences in unexplored places. A trip to Sisiyi Falls using shared transport will cost you 100 USD per person for a minimum of 4 people. Karibuni Safaris can also arrange Mountain Bikes for an extra fee. Come have a blast in the great outdoors and immerse yourself into the local culture to boot.

River Laso gorges its way through the rocky Namusidwa Ridge emerging as a single water fall before splitting into three as it cascades down the cliff into the valley below. The waterfall on the extreme right carrying the most water and continues to the bottom, however, it is the other two falls which disappear into thin air that make Laso an architect’s dream and stunning piece of engineering by Mother Nature.
From a distance Laso falls appears to be three waterfalls, however, you get the feel of Laso after you ascend a steep 85 degree incline and it reveals itself making you appreciate why the locals regard it a shrine for the water god (were masakha). The two falls descend the cliff before jetting off in the last 25 meters, coming down in a chilly, misty spray covering an area the size of basket ball court.
You know you’re there when the extreme cold shocks you taking away your body heat instantly. For a second you remise that the two waterfalls simply disappear, but surprisingly you see water collect into a natural pool at the bottom. Due to constantly wet environment, the vegetation here is different from that a few meters away. As you start sucking in the detail, the cold bites in and the locals warn you could die from hypothermia cautioning you to leave immediately lest you fail to make a safe exit.
To get to Laso waterfalls, drive to Bupoto turn left and stop at Mutuwa (in the rainy season) before hiking 6 Kms to Bumalye. During the dry season you can drive up to Bumalye on a dirt track the total distance from Mbale is 36 Kms. The last 2 Kms involve an easy hike that gets strenuous as you get close to the water falls base. Laso waterfalls isn’t developed for tourism and not for the faint hearted, however, it is a challenge for adventurous explorer to savor.
Laso Falls is a natural wonder with significant spiritual value and due to the difficulty of getting to the base; it makes number one on off the beaten track for Karibuni Safaris we challenge you to dare it. We recommend you to carry warm clothing in order to explore and enjoy the scenic views. Contact Karibuni Safaris if you want to dare Laso waterfalls, those who make it to the base of the falls are rewarded with breathtaking views. Read more about Laso waterfalls on our blog post for the detailed excursion.

Bulago is best visited as an extension of a trip to Sipi Falls or Sisiyi Falls, to inspire you by paying a visit to this scenic village. To get there you turn off to Kamu’s Corner from Kaserem on Kapchorwa road, the road winds through some superb cliffs and passes through a rocky gorge before reaching Bulago, that’s if you’re not daring enough to use ladders ( More on Bugi Trail).
Bulago village itself stands on a cliff top above a lovely water fall, dropping into a pretty meadow. A rocky plateau beyond the village overlooks the Butandiga Ridge; there is a trail that climbs the cliff that borders the National Park for hikers. There are

scenic forest views and plenty of bird life for birders.

Accommodation is available by the catholic missionaries in the area; they have a rest house used by their volunteers and missionaries. Accommodation has to be arranged in advance regarding availability, alternatively Karibuni Safaris can arrange a camping safari to the area for those willing to rough it abit.
This excursion will come at 100 USD per person, shared transport, for 4 people willing to share the tent in the evening. This is great outdoor destination, plenty of clean air and a chance to immerse in the Gisu culture. This is another destination off the beaten track and most services are basic, you will however relax and recuperate in natural surroundings.

THE BUGI TRAIL

Bugi trail was made to scale the terrain often with cliffs dropping 90 degrees to move to the next village. Bagisu devised an ingenious method of timber ladders 300 metres high and 30 metres wide to move up and down the cliffs to Kamu’s Corner to buy goods. This shortened the distance covered by vehicles and the locals use this ladder with the ease of a chimpanzee.

Coming face to face with this gigantic ladder can send a shiver down your spine, as wonder whether you will make to the top. As you ascend the ladders they start shaking and increase in frequency all the way to the top. You are advised not to look down as the shaking ladders and the ground below you can make get you terrified.
Climbing the ladder is a thrilling but hair raising experience and not for the faint hearted. A trek up and down this ladder gives you a sense of accomplishment. Those who get to the top are rewarded with a view of Lake Kyoga and other areas. You get an insight of what the local people have to contend with on a regular basis.
Bugi trail is best undertaken as part of a larger excursion to Bulago area. The ladders are like being on a roller coaster; thrill seekers will get the ultimate adrenaline rush. Fortunately no accidents to date on this trail, so if you keep you’re nerves there is a good chance you will make it up and down.

Mgahinga Gorilla Park is Uganda’s smallest national park with 33.7km2; however it is one of the most dramatic as the park lies on the northern slopes of Mts. Muhabura, Mgahinga and Sabyinyo. These three volcanoes make an unforgettable panoramic backdrop. These peaks are three of the six Virunga volcanoes that mark the southern limit of the Albertine Rift Valley and are divided between Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo.

The Virungas are home to more than half of the world’s population of the endangered mountain gorilla. 380 individuals roam the slopes of the volcanoes the other 340 live nearby in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Fortunately Mgahinga’s small area is supplemented by two larger, adjoining parks in Rwanda (Volcanoes NP) and DR Congo (Virunga NP) and the gorilla’s not restricted by international boarders.

Though gorilla tracking is the park’s most popular activity, Mgahinga merits a visit simply to appreciate the scenery. A choice of hikes allows for all abilities, ranging from the 8 hour return trip to the summit of Mt. Muhabura, to gentle strolls across the lower slopes beneath the magnificent three peak backdrop.
The park experiences two rainy seasons; March-May and September-November. October is the wettest month, with 250mm of rain and July the driest with just 10mm.

Accessibility.
The park lies in the south-western corner of Uganda, 540km from Kampala. The journey takes 8 hours, excluding rest stops, passing via Kabale and Kisoro. The 80km section between Kabale and Kisoro is a winding, mountainous drive on murram that takes at least 2 hours, while the park gate at Ntebeko lies a bumpy 14km (30 minutes) south of Kisoro. Charter flights can be arranged from Entebbe or Kampala (Kajjansi) to Kisoro airstrip.

Accommodation.
At Ntebeko, the Volcanoes Camp provides upmarket accommodation while camping and basic cottages are provided in the Community Campground. A wide choice of lodging is available in Kisoro.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Kampala to Kisoro
Travel from Kampala to Kisoro which is about 540 km from Uganda’s Capital city after safari briefing. Overnight at Mgahinga Safari Lodge and Travellers’ rest.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga.
Have an early morning breakfast as you get set to visit the gorilla world, clearing up aspects of their ecosystem and behavior. Gorilla trekking is the most exciting and unforgettable experience, which might take one through a thick jungle for the whole of the day. The tourists group (The Nyakagezi group) consists of 9 members; 3 adult females, 2 silver backs, 2 juveniles and 2 infants. (Tracking can take three to eight hours). Gorilla trekking is very tiring so one has to go geared up. It is prudent that you wear good toehold shoes suitable for muddy places and binoculars for easy vision. Overnight at Mgahinga Safari Lodge and Travellers’ rest.

Day 3: Departure
After a morning breakfast, head back to Kampala and wait for your departure flight.

In the rift valley close to the Rwenzori Mountains and the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo lies the picturesque Semiliki National Park. The vegetation shares many similarities with the great Ituri forest. Tropical low land species can be seen here.

Local tribes in the area are the Bakonjo and the Bamba pygmies. The main features of this park are the hot springs.

The adjacent Semiliki Game Reserve has a beautiful main lodge with a luxurious tented camp. Night game drives are also conducted to see nocturnal species.
This reserve is also home to the rare Shoebill stork.

Semliki National Park protects an eastern extension of the vast Ituri Forest and forms part of a forest continuum that stretches across the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Zaire River. Being a relatively stable forest “refugium” during the climatic upheavals of the Pleistocene, this is one of the richest areas for forest birds in Africa. A large number of predominantly Central African species reach the eastern limit of their distribution here and cannot be found anywhere else in East Africa. These include some of the continent’s most spectacular and sought-after birds such as; Congo Serpent Eagle, Long-tailed Hawk, Nkulengu Rail, Black-wattled Hornbill and Lyre-tailed Honey guide. Although it is a bumpy three hours’ drive from Fort Portal, birders who make it to Semliki National Park will be richly rewarded with some of the very best forest birding in Uganda.

The 795km2 Kibale National Park contains one of the loveliest and most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda. This is home to a host of forest wildlife, most famously 13 species of primate including chimpanzee. Forest cover predominates in the northern and central parts of the park on the elevated Fort Portal plateau. Kibale is highest at the park’s northern tip which stands 1590m above sea level. Northern Kibale is the wettest area, receiving a mean annual rainfall of up to 1700mm, mostly during March-May and September-November. This pristine environment has pleasant with a mean annual temperature range of 14-27oC. Temperatures are highest (and rainfall lower) in the south where the terrain drops down onto the hot rift valley floor and forest gives way to open grassland.

Southern Kibale adjoins Queen Elizabeth National Park and together these protected areas maintain a 180km-long migration corridor for wildlife which extends from Ishasha, the remote southern sector of Queen Elizabeth NP, to the Sebitoli forest in the north of Kibale. The Kibale-Fort Portal area is one of Uganda’s most rewarding areas to explore. The park lies close to the tranquil Ndali crater area and within a half day’s drive of the Queen Elizabeth, Rwenzori Mountains and Semuliki National Parks and the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve.

Accessibility.
Kibale National Park is located in western Uganda, 26km south-east of Fort Portal town. Kanyanchu River Camp, the primary centre for tourism activities, can be reached from Kampala either from the north, via Mubende and Fort Portal, or the south through Mbarara and Kamwenge. The northern approach is shorter and quicker, with a 300km tarmac road running to Fort Portal followed by 36km on murram to Kanyanchu. Sebitoli Forest Camp, a secondary tourism centre, is even easier to reach. This stands directly on the Kampala road, 16km before Fort Portal. Public transport runs throughout the day between Kampala and Fort Portal (passing Sebitoli) and Fort Portal and Kamwenge (passing Kanyanchu).

Accommodation.
Kibale Primate Lodge provides mid range accommodation at Kanyanchu including stone cottages, tree houses and tented camps. Simple cottages are found at Sebitoli. Both sites provide campsites and canteens that provide basic meals to order.
Basic and mid range accommodation is available in the nearby villages of Bigodi and Nkingo while a wider choice is to be found in the Ndali Crater Area. This ranges from the upmarket Ndali Lodge and Kibale primate lodge to good budget options at Chimpanzee Guesthouse and Lake Nkuruba. Accommodation can also be found in Fort Portal town.

Flora and Fauna Species

Kibale’s varied altitude supports different types of flora, ranging from wet tropical forest (moist evergreen forest) on the Fort Portal plateau, through dry tropical forest (moist semi deciduous), to woodland and savanna on the rift valley floor. Around Kanyanchu, in the central part of the park, the high forest contains a mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees with the evergreen species dominant. Trees rise to over 55m and exhibit a semi-closed canopy of stratified tree crowns. The undergrowth is sparse with shade tolerant herbs, shrubs, a variety of ferns and broad leaved forest grasses. 351 tree species have been recorded in the park.

Kibale has the highest diversity and density of primates in Africa. The most famous of its 13 species is the chimpanzee, our closest relative. Kibale’s 1450 chimpanzee represent Uganda’s largest population of this endangered primate. Kibale is also home to the rare I’Hoest’s monkey and East Africa’s largest population of the threatened red colobus monkey. Other primates include the black and white colobus, blue monkey, grey cheeked mangabey, red tailed monkey, olive baboon, bush baby and potto. Other mammals are present, but rarely seen include forest elephant, buffalo, leopard, bush pig and duiker. A keen observer may spot reptiles and amphibians as well as a colourful variety of butterflies.

The park boasts 325 species of birds, including 6 that are endemic to the Albertine Rift region, namely black-capped apalis, blue-headed sunbird, collared apalis, dusky crimsonwing, purple-breasted sunbird and red-faced woodland warbler. Other Kibale specials include the African pitta, green breasted pitta, black bee-eater, yellow spotted nicator, yellow rumped tinker bird, little greenbul, black-eared ground thrush, brownchested alethe, blue-breasted kingfisher, Abyssinian groundthrush, and the crowned eagle.

Gorilla Safaris
Gorilla trekking is a challenging activity; therefore you must be physically fit. 8 people are permitted per group per day and a total of eighteen (24) people are taken in Bwindi, while six (8) people are allowed for Nkuringo group that can be accessed in Kisoro. So far, we have four groups for viewing. There are three groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, (Mubare, Habinyanja, and Rushegura) and one (Nkuringo) in Kisoro.

Gorilla trekking is possible in Rwanda as well. Parc National des Volcans (PNV) in Northern Rwanda is a habitat for about 300 mountain gorillas. There are four habituated gorilla families – Amahoro, “Group 13″, Sabinyo and Susa – each of the groups allows up to 8 participants per day. You can track gorillas, climb the Visoke volcano, track the golden monkeys or visit the Karisoke Research Centre, which Dian Fossey the famous grammatologist set up, or visit local villages.

Gorilla Tracking Permits in Uganda
-Non residents pay USD 500.
-East African Residents pay USD 355
It’s advisable to book gorilla permits well in advance prior to your visit.
As your tour agent, Karibuni shall handle all your bookings for Gorilla permits both for Bwindi and Mgahinga.

Gorilla trekking rules should be adhered to. Read rules
Non Governmental Organizations involved in the conservation of Gorillas include:
The Dianney Fossey Foundation
International Gorilla Conservation Program.
Africa Wildlife Foundation: http://www.awf.org/

Sport Fishing
Sport fishing is exciting in Uganda fresh water Lakes and Rivers
In Lake Victoria, trolling with lures is the method of fishing used. All the necessary fishing tackle for Nile perch trolling on the lake is provided but anglers are free to bring their own equipment. Trips can be for the day, no previous experience required, or for longer for the keener, serious fisherman.

At Murchison Falls National Park fish are caught on live bait or with casting lures including Nile perch and various species of cat fish.

There are also a large variety of smaller species, (used as live bait), obtained by spinning including tiger fish. Fishing is either from the river bank or from a boat at the base of the falls area. This fishing is generally done over a few days and can be very exciting but it does require some experience and also a certain level of fitness due to the access conditions.

Fishing Operators encourage the catch and release policy for all trips.

The following Tour Operators offer affordable sport fishing safaris in Uganda
Wildlife Safaris:

Most of this game is found in National Parks and game reserves of Uganda managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Birding safaris:
Uganda-gifted by Nature is one of the select groups of African countries to have recorded more than 1,000 bird species. It’s therefore an ideal destination for bird watchers who would like to see, and for those interested in discovering and naming new species of birds, the choice is to pay a visit to the natural wetlands, forests and open savannah wood lands that provide excellent habitat for both endemic and migratory birds.

Most of our National Parks have a diversity of bird species and if you are a bird lover, then Uganda is the ultimate destination that will make you spoilt for choice! Our excellent guides will add flavor to your birding experience.

Hiking expeditions:
Uganda offers the best ultimate Mountain Climbing Adventures on East African Mountains. If you like mountaineering, then the (5,119 m) high, snow covered Rwenzori Mountains – also known as the ‘ mountains of the moon ‘ and protected as Rwenzori Mountains National Park which is also a World Heritage Centre – will offer you the unique experience you’ve been looking for. The mist-shrouded peaks provide stunning backdrops to this magnificent mountain. Ever since the Rwenzori became known to the World, its features have been changing. Today, the most visible and probably preventable, changes in the Rwenzori are the fragile vegetation along the trails.

A trip into the Rwenzoris is an exhilarating and rewarding experience but one, which must be planned with attention to detail. The key to an enjoyable visit is ‘be prepared!’ You can do the central circuit in just 7 sevens and our excellent guides will be there to add flavor to your experience. Those took up the challenge to climb this mountain have promised to come back, if you are an excellent hiker, looking for a lifetime adventure; please make your reservation now.

It is not just the Rwenzoris alone that you hike in Uganda; there is the famous Mount Elgon National Park. At Mount Elgon National Park, mountaineering can be experienced on this volcanic mountain which is (4,321 m), the 4th highest mountain in East Africa, located in the eastern part of Uganda on the border with Kenya.

Others are: Mt. Sabyinyo (366m)’Old man’s teeth’ like an old man, time has eroded Mt. Sabyinyo’s crown. This volcano offers 3 challenging peaks to climb. A climb up the mountain takes one up a ridge along the eastern side of the climb to peak. If you are to continue, the climb to the peak 11 involves walking a ridge with breath-taking drops into gorges of Rwanda and Uganda, a dual experience you will achieve here.

Mt. Gahinga (3474m). On your way to the park, look out for small piles of stones in the garden fields. The local people call such a pile a ‘Gahinga’.

Mount Gahinga is quite bigger than the average ‘gahinga’ but sitting next to Mount Muhavura does make it look small. A hike, which takes you about, six hours round trip, goes through a good example of a pure Bamboo forest. Gahinga once had a Crater Lake on top but time has changed it into a Lush swamp. Distance to the swamp is 8km.

Mt. Muhavura (4127m)’The Guide’
Seen from all over Kisoro, this volcano acts as a guide. The typical cone-shaped Mountain provides some of the best views in the country. Much of the climb passes a rocky surface covered by grasses and small shrubs. Once at the top, hikers are rewarded with the view of the Virunga volcanoes, Lake Edward in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi and the peaks of Rwenzori Mountain. The hike takes approximately 8 hours round trip covering 12km.You are advised to camp at the Muhavura base camp the night before the site has no facilities so you need a tent, water, food and sleeping gear.

Rafting experience:
Uganda is blessed with the River Nile, the second longest river in the world after Mississippi and has one of the best waterfalls suitable for WWR.
Also, The Nile High Bungee has to be one of the most visually impressive bungee jumps in the World!

Bwindi impenetrable forest national park is one of the last habitats for the mountain gorilla. It has 350 individuals over half of the surviving mountain gorillas in the world. This park was created in 1992 and it became a World Heritage Site in 1994. Experts believe that the Bwindi mountain gorilla maybe a different species from their cousins in the Virungas. It takes roughly 6 hours to travel from Kampala to the park.
Bwindi is one of the richest areas in Africa for flora and fauna. Besides mountain gorilla tracking, Bwindi national park has a teaming 10 pieces of primates including the chimpanzee, black and white colobus, and olive baboons. Bwindi also harbors forest elephants, duikers, bush bucks and the rear giant forest hogs. Bird watchers will find this a prime destination with an exciting list of 350 birds. The rarities include 23 of the 24 Albertine Rift endemics and endangered species like the African broad bill. Spotting birds requires the help of field guides as the forest habitant makes it difficult for you to spot one.
There 5 groups of habituated mountain gorillas in Bwindi, 3 within walking distance from Muhoma where the park head office and accommodation for all budget options. The other group Nkuringo has 19 individuals and located to the south of the park easily accessible from Kisoro. The most recent addition is the Nshongi group comprised of 35 individuals with 3 silverbacks. The groups are Mubare 10, Habiyanja 18 and Rushegura with individuals. We organize gorilla tours to Mugahinga, Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans and Parc National des Virungas in DR Congo as well.
Only 8 tourists per day can visit each family this gives a maximum 40 visitors. Demand usually exceeds supply most of the year and you are adviced to book your gorilla tour well in advance. Gorilla tracking permits cost 500 US dollars. Trips start at 8.30 am, however there is a debriefing session at 8 am. Children below 15 years or anyone with flu or other transmittable disease are not allowed to trek gorillas. Warm clothing is required at night and early morning plus wet weather gear it pours a lot here.
Once your Uganda safari group starts tracking gorillas the chances of seeing them are 95%. The terrain in Bwindi is heavily forested and mountainous tracking can take 1- 4 hours depending on where the group your tracking decided to range and rest the previous night. You’re only allowed one hour in contact with the gorilla keeping a minimum distance of 5 metres. Cameras with flash lights are not allowed.
There are several other activities to do in Bwindi getting close and personal and learning more about this unique and picturesque environment.
Forest walks- UWA offers several walks that take you through Uganda’s most pristine forest and view birds and primates. A half day hike cost 15 US dollars plus the guide fees.
Waterfall trail- this trail lead you through tree ferns, orchids includes a 33 metre waterfall on Munyaga River. This hike is fairly strenuous and takes about 3 hours.
Muzabijiro loop trail- This trail takes you to the summit of Rukubira hill giving you breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes and the western rift the weather permitting. This hike takes about 3 hours.
Rushara Hill trail- this provides spectacular views of the Virunga volcanoes and the plains of the rift valley. On clear days the peaks on Mt Rwenzori can be seen.
River Ivi trail- follows an old road through the forest emerging at Nkuringo on the southern edge of the forest. This hike is highly recommended for bird watchers.

Buhoma village walk- Includes a section of the forest and getting up-close with the community. Proceeds from your tour are ploughed back in the community. There are several community handicraft projects and small shops where you can buy a wooden gorilla souvenir.
There are accommodation options for all budgets. The up-market lodges like Buhoma Lodge, Mantana tented camp and Gorilla forest camps cater exclusively for their own clientele. There are midrange facilities at Nshongi River while the Nkuringo and Nshongi group can be visited from the Kisoro town with affordable accommodation in Travellers Inn.

Sir Winston Churchill, a former British prime minister is considered one of the greatest statesmen to date. To his tribute, he was also extensively traveled and below we quote some of his words to describe Uganda.

“I had traveled through tropical forests in Cuba and India and had often before admired their enchanting, yet sinister luxuriance. But the forests of Uganda, for magnificence, for variety of form and color, insect, reptile, beast, for the vast scale and fecundity of the natural processes that are beheld at work, eclipsed, and indeed effaced all previous impressions”.

Churchill therefore went on to conclude that indeed, Uganda is the “pearl of Africa “.

So if you are looking for where ” real Africa ” lies, look no further than to this beautiful and inviting country Uganda, the Pearl of Africa and Gifted by Nature, blessed with a remarkable array of fauna, flora, Lakes and Snow capped Mountains famously known as the mountains of the moon.

Uganda today is considered a top-notch destination with a lot to offer and yet remains one of Africa’s best kept secrets. Uganda is one of the only two countries in Africa where you will find the resident tree-climbing Lions.
Uganda is home to half the world’s population of the highly endangered mountain Gorilla’s and some of the world’s best game parks are in Uganda.

It is the most alluring destination for Butterfly and bird enthusiasts with over 1000-bird species inventoried

Uganda is one of the countries in the world with very rich culture and diverse ethnic tribes.
The world’s longest river, the Nile, has its source in Uganda and is one of the best places for sport fishing and Africa’s capital for white water rafting

Ugandans are known, for being the friendliest of all the African people, more especially to tourists.

Looking for the most powerful natural rush of water in the world, come to Murchison Falls in Uganda

Uganda is known for having the best weather in the world.
For succulent, fresh and very nice fruits, try Uganda.
Uganda safaris activities

GAME AND SCENERY VIEWING: Uganda has adversity of wild life. Game drive is full of great glimpses of the indigenous wildlife/scenery. We boast of diverse habitants ranging from savannah, wetlands, forests and mountains ecosystem, and corresponding diverse species

GORILLA TRACKING: There are only about 650 individual gorillas left in the whole world and Uganda has more than 50% of these. Gorilla tracking is therefore a captivating and life time experience involving guided walks in the forest wilderness in search of these great apes

CHIMPANZE TRACKING: Visiting our cousins is another very interesting experience. The way they feed, respond to humans, mate, care for their young ones, is just phenomenal. The chimp habituation team goes in the morning and or evening to see how they make and unmake their beds. Visitors are guided to experience this.

BIRD VIEWING: Uganda is a world birding destination. Located at mid way of the African countinet; Uganda attracts migrants from the north or south and is the richest country for birds in Africa. Out of 1500 bird species found in east Africa, over 1000 species of these exist in Uganda, compared to about 700 found in Europe. Some of the existing birds you will view include birds of water, land shore, scrub and wood land, forests and birds of the open plain.

SPORT FISHING: This refers for fishing for pleasure with a single rod, reel, or line where any fish caught are not for sale or barter. Although is an old practice in Uganda, sport fishing is a relatively anew tourist product but started with full vigor.

FOREST AND PRIMATE TREKS: In most of our national parks and wild life reserves, we develop a net work of trails for nature walks.Experience the quietness of the wildness with sweet natural songs from birds and gentle winds from leaves of tropical rain forests. Depending on ones interest, there are short and long distance day or night walks, hiking, primate walks, spring/bank e.t.c if interested in a true forest walk, visit Uganda

MOUNTAINEERING: Ever heard of snow at the equator then experience the 5,119m high snow covered Rwenzori Mountains also known as the mountains of the moon and protected as a national park but also as a world heritage site. A trip into the Rwenzori is a life time adventure and an exhilarating and rewarding experience that takes you about 7days/nights.There is also the famous volcanic mountain Elgon(4,32m),also a national park at the border with Kenya, where mountaineering can be experienced and may include cross border tourism in to Kenya. At the top, it has a beautiful and a large caldera of 40km.

HIKING: This is another self-rewarding activity that you can engage in at mt. Mgahinga, also home to the famous gorilla. Particularly exciting are the virunga volcanoes, which offer three exciting volcanoes (my.sabyinyo 366m, mt.Gahinga 347m and mt. Muhavura 412m).At mt. Sabyinyo, a hike up to the top of the 3 peaks guarantees you to be in Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and at the sometime.

Bwindi Safari

Uganda safari information
Only 8 tourists per day can visit each family this gives a maximum 40 visitors. Demand usually exceeds supply most of the year and you are adviced to book your gorilla tour well in advance. Gorilla tracking permits cost 500 US dollars. Trips start at 8.30 am, however there is a debriefing session at 8 am. Children below 15 years or anyone with flu or other transmittable disease are not allowed to trek gorillas. Warm clothing is required at night and early morning plus wet weather gear it pours a lot here.

Once your group starts tracking gorillas the chances of seeing them are 95%.
